Decatur, IL has a shortage of corn and the ethanol plants need the corn to meet prior contracted obligations.

- Futures price for May Corn on 4/10 is $4.75
- Basis = Cash – Futures
- Basis = $4.85 – $4.75
- Basis = +$0.10
The basis for this farmer in Decatur, IL is “10 over May”, which means the local price is 10 cents over the May futures.
Why is this important? Cash prices can have a significant impact on futures prices. If basis across the country is rising, the futures prices may rally. If the basis across the country is declining, the futures price may fall.
Some traders track national basis averages, as well as basis in key areas of the country, as they believe the cash price leads the futures prices, which is sometimes the case.
The basics of trading forex
This means that it’s up to you to compute your gains and losses and file your dues or deductions with the appropriate tax authorities. I know it’s difficult, so I decided to put together a mini-primer on how Forex trading taxes work as I understand it.
As a budding Forex trader in the U.S., you have to be aware of two sections of the tax code: Section 988 and Section 1256. Both of these sections were initially made for forward contracts, but over time, they have also carried over to apply to spot Forex transactions.
As retail Forex traders, by default, we fall under the tax provisions of IRC Section 988.
This has its perks and its drawbacks.
Section 988 states that an individual (or a monster, in the case of Cyclopip) has the ability to claim capital losses as an income tax deduction.

There were both good times and bad times. But I never gave up.
I soon realized that some of the ‘gurus’ were actually the real deal, so I started to pay attention to them and see what they had to offer. In the meantime, I became smarter with my money management, got out of the day trading habit and generally simplified my trading methods so they were easy to implement and explain. I have also dabbled with building my own trading robots with mixed success and use them at times to assist me with my trading.
I generally prefer to manually manage a trade once I am in as I find the human brain can perform a lot better than a robot that works on certain inputs. The basics of trading options
According to Pipcrawler, it helps to impress the ladies!By definition, a capital loss is when you sell an asset for less than what it cost you, such as in the case of a losing trade. Capital gains, on the other hand, occur when you sell an asset for more than its cost.
Now, deduct your total capital losses from your capital gains and you have your NET capital gain or NET capital loss, depending on whether you ended up positive or not.
The beauty of Section 988 is that in the event your capital losses exceed your capital gains (as in the case of a net capital loss), you can claim the excess as a deduction from your other sources of income.
In other words, if you had posted capital losses of $12,000 and a capital gain of $10,000, you would still be able to claim excess loss of $2,000 as a tax deduction.
The basics of trading online
When the basis is negative, the cash is lower than the futures, that usually means the local market is in sufficient supply of the commodity. The more supply in the market, the lower the basis can get. If the local market has less supply, or even an outright shortage, basis can be positive with the cash over the futures.
Lets say a farmer in Decatur, IL has corn in the bin and looking to sell to the local ethanol plant.
It is still April 10th, the futures are still at $4.75, but the local price is $4.85.
