Morgan, Singapore Airlines, Starbucks and Xbox as customers.

Microsoft’s documentation suggests users start migrating to an alternative now. The recommended migration destination is ConsenSys Quorum Blockchain Service. Users also could opt to self-manage their blockhains using VMs.

I asked Microsoft for official word as to why the company decided to shut down Azure Blockchain. No response so far.

Update (May 21 — better late than never): “We are asking customers to transition to the ConsenSys Quorum Blockchain Solution. Microsoft has a rich history of working with partners with the shared goals of innovating and delivering solutions to our customers.

Azure virtual machine shut down, but the VM was not adhering to the shut down new time.. Learn how asking the wrong question can cause you to miss the answer!

Background – the change The systems administrator had an Azure Automation Runbook in place that told the Azure Windows Server virtual machine to shut down at 10pm each night. After changing the script to 11pm, the admin noticed that the server was still shutting down at 10pm.

So they started to investigate the wrong question …

“Why isn’t the VM acknowledging the changed time in the updated schedule?”

The importance of broader questions With this question, we’re assuming part of the cause – that the VM is controlled by the Azure Automation Runbook but somehow doesn’t realize there has been an updated change to the schedule.

Come to the cloud, it has consumption-based billing! But what does that mean, exactly? Is my virtual machine free if it is shut down? Let’s explore the billing components of an Azure Virtual Machine.

Resources in Azure all have particular cost meters and charging methods. Each product page details what those are. For consumption-based billing, you need to broaden your perception of what the word “consumption” means. You might think you’re not consuming the services of a virtual machine if it is shut down, but it is a little more comprehensive than that.

Azure Virtual Machine components

When you create a Windows Virtual Machine in Azure, you don’t get just one resource.

If corruption is reported run the following command until the disk is corruption free:dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

If you are unable to collect a process memory dump, or this issue is recursive and you require a root cause analysis, proceed with collecting an OS memory dump below, the proceed to open a support request.

Collect an OS memory dump

If the issue does not resolve after waiting for the changes to process, you would need to collect a memory dump file and contact support. To collect the Dump file, follow these steps:

Attach the OS disk to a recovery VM

  1. Take a snapshot of the OS disk of the affected VM as a backup.

In the interim, the focus was to add blockchain partners of all kinds, rather than trying to pick a limited number of potential winners, officials said.

Blockchain is the technology that underpins the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. But many tech vendors and users felt it had far more uses beyond that. A blockchain is a shared ledger that can store the complete transaction history of not just cryptocurrency but other kinds of records.
As such, it attracted initial interest among some enterprises, especially those in banking and finance.

Microsoft ended up fielding a preview of Azure BaaS, but lately had not done much to update the service. However, Microsoft’s product page for Azure BaaS lists GE, J.P.

Defender platform, but Jakkal noted that RiskIQ’s data not only helps enrich this existing dataset but also enables an additional layer on top of Defender that gives security teams a view of the entire attack chain.

“They can see the entire attack chain, they can act on it and then — combined with their own human intelligence — they can see where the attack is going and how to proactively prevent it,” Jakkal explained.

The service also provides users with a library of raw threat intelligence and analysis from Microsoft’s security experts, which in turn should help security teams find, remove and block adversary tools that may be hidden within their organization.

Meanwhile, the new external attack surface management service helps these security teams understand how a potential attacker sees their network.

  • Detach the disk containing the files needed from the working VM and attach the disk to your broken VM. We are calling this disk the Utility disk.

  • Use Serial Console to complete the following steps:

    1. Open an administrative PowerShell and check the service that stops responding upon stopping.

      Get-Service | Where-Object {$_.Status -eq “STOP_PENDING”}

    2. On an administrative CMD, get the PID of the unresponsive service.

      tasklist /svc | findstr /i <STOPING SERVICE

    3. Get a memory dump sample from the unresponsive process <STOPPING SERVICE.

      procdump.exe -s 5 -n 3 -ma <PID

    4. Now kill the unresponsive process to unlock the shutdown process.

      taskkill /PID <PID /t /f

Once the OS starts again, if it boots normally, then just ensure the OS consistency is ok.

For more information, see Decrypt the encrypted OS disk in the VM that cannot boot.

Locate dump file and submit a support ticket

    1. On the recovery VM, go to windows folder in the attached OS disk. If the driver letter that is assigned to the attached OS disk is F, you need to go to F:\Windows.

    2. Locate the memory.dmp file, and then submit a support ticket with the dump file.

If you cannot find the dump file, move the next step to enable dump log and Serial Console.

Enable dump log and Serial Console

To enable dump log and Serial Console, run the following script.

    1. Open elevated command Prompt session (Run as administrator).

    2. Run the following script:

In this script, we assume that the drive letter that is assigned to the attached OS disk is F.

Last week, Microsoft shut down some of its UserVoice forums, and it did so without any warning to its users or even its MVPs. Now, the firm has finally published a support page to show what’s going on.

Unsurprisingly, the answer to our questions from last week is yes, UserVoice is going away. It’s a third-party service, and Microsoft’s going to start using its own first-party solutions.
It’s going to be doing this throughout the year on a product-by-product basis.

It’s not a surprise, as the firm has built out so many feedback solutions over the past few years. In the support document, it refers to the Windows Feedback Hub, Microsoft Community, Microsoft TechCommunity, Microsoft Store, and Microsoft Q&A all as resources that it will be using.

Azure Windows VM shutdown is stuck on “Restarting”, “Shutting Down”, or “Stopping services”

    In this article

This article provides steps to resolve the issues of “Restarting”, “Shutting down”, or “Stopping services” messages that you may encounter when you reboot a Windows virtual machine (VM) in Microsoft Azure.

When you use Boot diagnostics to view the screenshot of the VM, you may see that the screenshot displays the message “Restarting”, “Shutting down”, or “Stopping services”.

Windows uses the shutdown process to perform system maintenance operations, and process changes such as updates, roles, and features. It’s not recommended to interrupt this critical process until it completes. Depending on the number of updates/changes and the VM size, the process may take a long time.
