Define Hit

hit. Technically speaking, a request by a browser for a single file from a web server hosting a web site.

It used to be that a web site's activity was characterized by the number of "hits" it received, which many people interpreted as the number of visitors.

However, every graphic on a web page is a separate file and, as the Internet grew bigger and became more graphics-laden, a request for a single page might involve dozens of files and, therefore, dozens of hits.

Today, counting hits is seldom done. More sophisticated tracking methods, such as those deployed by Google, allow webmasters to track actual visitors and, more importantly, unique visitors to their sites.
