Define Double Opt In

double opt in (DOI). A system for signing up for an email list or autoresponder series that requires the recipient to indicate his or her willingness to receive communication from an Internet marketer twice.

The first indication is when the individual signs up for the list. The marketer then sends a confirmation email to the address given (typically by means of an autoresponder) asking the recipient to confirm that he or she actually is the person who signed up. By responding, the individual indicates for the second time his or her willingness to receive further email communication.

Although double opt in is not absolutely required, it is the preferred method of building email lists for many Internet marketers since it decreases spam complaints.

See also, single opt in.
