Define Domain Sniping

domain sniping. The art of registering domain names that have just expired.

Domains don't actually expire when Whois says they do, a little know secret to most folks. Instead they expire roughly 75-80 days after the official expiration date. During the interim, the current owner has the option to renew.

When the domain names really does expire, a brief moment known as "The Drop," it can be reregistered.

If you have your eye on a soon to expire or recently "expired" domain name, you can simply wait and hope that you are the only person interested. But if you really want that domain name, you will have to try to snipe it.

While this can be done by the average individual, it is fiendishly difficult, so anyone serious about grabbing an expired domain uses the services of a company that specializes in snatching just-expired domains using massive computing power. This is called placing a backorder.

If you are successful - and that can be a big if - the cost will be much higher than the usual "list" price of a domain name.

Firms that specialize in this include:

NameJet

Pool.com

SnapNames

Enom

You can also place a backorder with GoDaddy, the domain registrar.
